Women's soccer snags 1-0 win against Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Sophomore midfielder Christina Sanzari broke a scoreless tie in the 83rd minute to lift the Skidmore College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win against Union, Tuesday night at Wachenheim Field in the Liberty League opener for both teams.

The Thoroughbreds go to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Dutchwomen go to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.

After 34 scoreless minutes, it was Union that nearly opened the scoring as Valerie Taylor's left-footed strike from the top of the 18 came crashing off the crossbar.

Skidmore had its best chance of the half moments later, but Dutchwomen goalkeeper Erica Matteo parried Courtney Shaw's dangerous cross from the right wing out of harm's way, sending the game into halftime at 0-0.

The Dutchwomen pressed early in the second half and came close again in the 64th minute from a free kick. The ball was delivered into the box and it found its way to Jessica Farland on the back post, forcing Thoroughbreds goalkeeper Deirdre Walsh to make a sprawling save to deny Farland's close range effort.

Katie Mohanan created a quality scoring opportunity just over 10 minutes later, taking a pass from Breana Derella and dribbling past her defender before poking a shot from 10 yards just wide of the post.

The Thoroughbreds withstood the pressure and answered back in the closing minutes of the game. Emma Basso powered a header on goal after rising to meet Nicole LoRusso's free kick, but Matteo was able to make a diving save to her left to keep the game tied. Skidmore continued to press forward and it was rewarded 50 seconds later on Sanzari's first of the season.

Sanzari collected a loose ball 30 yards from goal and took two quick dribbles before unleashing a curling strike that dropped just under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.

The Dutchwomen had one final chance in the dying seconds of the game but Derella watched her shot roll wide of the left post after Alice Hayden clipped a long ball into the Skidmore box.

Union outshot Skidmore 12-9, while the Thoroughbreds had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Walsh and Matteo each finished with four saves on the day.

Skidmore travels to Clarkson Saturday, Sept. 26 for a 3 p.m. contest.
