Field hockey falls to #11 Montclair, 3-2

MONTCLAIR, N.J.—Eleventh-ranked Montclair State used two second-half goals to earn a 3-2 non-conference win over the fifth-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team on Sunday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds go to 3-2, while the Red Hawks, who have won four straight, improve to 6-1.

Skidmore senior defender Jenn Hanks recorded a multi-point game with a goal and an assist, Becca Halter picked up her fourth point in three games with an assist and junior midfielder Krista Lamoreaux added a goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Zoe McGuire made double-digit saves for the third consecutive game, stopping 11 shots over the first 43:37. Freshman Elizabeth Coughlin stopped two shots over the final 26:23.

Montclair jumped out to a 1-0 6:35 into the game as Kelly Kramer pounced on a rebound and converted from close range after McGuire stop Charisse Myers' initial shot.

The Red Hawks nearly doubled their lead in the 18th minute, but McGuire made a diving save on the left post to deny a Maura Johnston, keeping the game at 1-0.

Hanks pulled the visitors even just over eight minutes later from a penalty corner. Halter slid a pass to Hanks on the left wing and she blasted a shot inside the near post to make it 1-1 at the half.

Montclair struck quickly in the second half, taking a 2-1 lead from a Alexa Constantine penalty stroke, but the Thoroughbreds responded eight minutes later on Lamoreaux's second of the season.  

The Red Hawks managed to regain their lead in the 57th minute as Amber Haslett jammed home a rebound to make it 3-2.

Skidmore continued to press, but Red Hawks goalkeeper Rebecca Brattole made all six of her saves in the second half to preserve 3-2 win.

Montclair outshot Skidmore 20-12, including a 10-2 advantage in the first half, while the Thoroughbreds had a 10-9 edge in penalty corners.

Skidmore hosts Richard Stockton at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 in its first home game since Sept. 1.
