SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y—Freshman forward
Gabby Hyman netted her first two collegiate goals to lead the fifth-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team past St. John Fisher, 4-1, in the season opener for both teams Tuesday at Wagner Park.
Â
Krista Lamoreaux and
Kayla Rose also tallied for the Thoroughbreds (1-0), while
Dani DeGregory added a pair of assists.
Â
Skidmore struck early, as Hyman put the home side in front 6:50 into the contest. DeGregory unloaded a high shot from the top of the circle and Hyman was quick with her stick, redirecting the strike into the back of the net.
Â
The Cardinals (1-0) answered back quickly with an equalizer from Lauren Fazio just under three minutes later. Gabby LaForce led a Fisher counter attack, dribbling into the circle before picking out Fazio alone on the back post for a tap-in into an empty net.
Â
After 20 scoreless minutes, Hyman produced what proved to be the game-winner, receiving a long pass before beating her defender one-on-one and firing a shot into the bottom left corner.
Â
Lamoreaux doubled the Thoroughbreds lead four minutes into the second half, jamming home a pass from DeGregory from close range.
Â
Skidmore continued to press and was rewarded seven minutes later, as Rose received a cross from Seely Fancher and converted on a shot from 10 yards to put the game away at 4-1.
Â
The Thoroughbreds outshot the Cardinals 21-10 and had a 10-2 edge in penalty corners.
Zoe McGuire earned her first career win in her first career start in goal for Skidmore, making six saves. Danielle Famolaro turned away 12 shots in goal for Fisher.
Â
The Thoroughbreds go on the road to take on Cortland at 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5.
