Softball goes 1-1 with RIT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College softball team split Liberty League games with RIT on Saturday, winning the first 7-0 and losing 4-2 in the second.

The Thoroughbreds are 11-15 overall and 2-4 in League play.  The Tigers move to 6-16 and 2-6.

Skidmore will host league leader University of Rochester on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In the first game, Lauren Fortunato hit a grand slam well beyond the centerfield fence to break the game open in the bottom of the fourth.

The Thoroughbreds scored two in the second. Lauren Gorstein had a double through the right side and later scored on a clutch two strike infield single by Abby Shea. Shea stole second and then scored on a Dani DeGregory single.

The rest of the team's runs came in the fourth. Gorstein doubled and scored on a Casey Attonito single. Shea and Lizette Roman-Johnston each singled to load the bases and set the stage for Fortunato's third homer of the season.

Amanda Carilli went the distance for the complete game shutout. She allowed five hits, walked none and had five strikeouts.

In the second game, RIT took a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first.  Skidmore got one back in its half of the first when Fortunato doubled and scored on a Gorstein single.

The Tigers put two more on the board in the fifth on the strength of a 2-run homer by Tori Blaker.

The Thoroughbreds cut it to two in the sixth when Shea reached on a error and scored on a DeGregory triple.

DeGregory finished 4-4 with two doubles and a triple. Fishkin reached on a walk to extend her on base streak to 12 games and Fortunato kept her hit streak alive at seven.

Skidmore stranded nine runners.

Carilli took the loss, going all seven. She allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits. Once again she didn't give up a walk.

Lauren Mahar won it for the Tigers. She gave up two runs (one earned) on eight hits and three walks. She had two strikeouts
