POTSDAM , N.Y.—The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in the second half to secure a 10-8 Liberty League win over Clarkson, Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.
Trailing 7-6 with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation, the Thoroughbreds (9-3, 4-1 Liberty League) rattled off four straight goals to take a 10-7 lead. The Golden Knights (7-5, 2-3) pulled back within one with 2:50 to play, but Skidmore never gave Clarkson another look a goal, hanging on for the 10-8 win. With the win, the Thoroughbreds move in to second place in the league standings.
In the first ten minutes of the game, Clarkson controlled the action. Christine Wright opened the scoring at 28:08 and Taylor Collins scored at 26:31 to double the Golden Knights lead. After
Emma Harris cut the Skidmore deficit in half, Collins and Wright tallied back-to-back goals to open up a Clarkson 4-1 advantage.
Peggy Healy brought the Thoroughbreds within two and after Danielle Faivus restored the Golden Knights three-goal cushion,
Allison Byrne and Harris netted back-to-back goals to make it 5-4. Paige Fayette scored with 5:44 to play in the half to give Clarkson a 6-4 edge, but
Brittney Dioneda provided a response for Skidmore 14 seconds later with her fourth goal in five games, making it 6-5 at the half.
The Thoroughbreds carried the momentum into the second half, tying the game at 6-6 on a goal from
Marisa Caponi. The Golden Knights pulled back in front with 21:42 to play, as Ashley Flick scored her seventh goal of the season, but Skidmore fired back with four consecutive goals.
Caroline Bowne's first of the season tied the game at 7-7,
Adele Mackey gave the visitors their first lead just over five minutes later and
Spencer Morgan provided the final push, producing two goals in a 75-second span to put Skidmore in front 10-7. Wright completed her hat trick with 2:50 left, but the Thoroughbreds won the ensuing draw and never relinquished possession to secure the 10-8 win.
Skidmore had an advantage in shots at 24-20 and a 15-9 edge in ground balls.
Megan Kolopsky made eight saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds, while Danielle Tani stopped six shots for Clarkson.
Skidmore hosts its final home games of the regular season next weekend, taking on RIT Friday, April 17 before facing Rochester Saturday, April 18.
