Men's lacrosse blows past Vassar, 12-5

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Senior attackman Josh Trachentenberg scored five goals and added an assist to lead the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team to a 12-5 Liberty League win over Vassar, Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the league, while the Brewers go to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Trachtenberg also caused three turnovers and finished with a game-high seven groundballs. Junior attackman Kevin Mulvey and freshman attackman Brendan Halloran each added a pair of goals. Connor Hunter chipped in with a goal and an assist and RJ Caruso contributed a pair of helpers. In goal, Chris Baughan stopped 14 shots for his third career win, marking his fourth consecutive game with double-digit saves.

Vassar's Liam Moriarty netted a fourth-quarter hat trick to lead the Brewers offense. Sean Brazier tallied two goals and Sam Houston-Read produced two assists. In goal, Erik Mikelinich made seven saves in 49:25, while Brandon Crecco stopped one shot over the final 10:35.

Skidmore got goals from four different players in the first quarter, opening a 4-0 lead. Trachtenberg put the Thoroughbreds on the board at just over three minutes into the contest and Jack Curry doubled the lead four minutes later, taking a feed from Ian Maag and ripping a long range shot into the top corner. Mulvey made it 3-0, as Trachtenberg caused a turnover on a Vassar clearing attempt and threaded a pass to Mulvey, who found the back of the net. Halloran was the beneficiary of another Trachtenberg caused turnover, scoring the final goal of the frame on a breakaway after Trachtenberg picked him out alone in front of goal.

After Trachtenberg made it 5-0 38 seconds into the second quarter, Brazier got the Brewers on the board, taking a behind-the-back feed from Houston-Read before converting from in tight. Skidmore answered back off the ensuing faceoff, as Hunter collected the groundball and ran in untouched before slotting home his fourth of the season. Trachtenberg completed his hat trick with 3:04 to play, extended the Thoroughbreds lead to 7-1 at the half.

Skidmore's offense continued to click in the second half. Mulvey potted his second of the game with a sizzling shot and Trachtenberg made it 9-1 just over three minutes later. Brazier and Houston-Read connected again on a Brewers extra-man opportunity it 9-2 heading into the fourth quarter.

Justin Csenge restored the Thoroughbreds eight-goal cushion with his first tally of the season and Trachtenberg made it 11-2 with his fifth of the game. Moriarty scored two goals in 28 seconds to cut the Vassar deficit to seven, but that's as close as they would get. Halloran netted his second of the contest before Moriarty scored the game's final goal with 4:17 remaining, giving Skidmore the 12-5 win.

The Thoroughbreds outshot the Brewers 35-34 and owned a 38-29 advantage in groundballs. Skidmore was 0-4 with the extra man, while Vassar finished 1-2.

Skidmore goes on the road to take on Liberty League newcomer Bard at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 4.
