Softball splits with 6-3 win over Springfield

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—The Skidmore College softball secured a split with a 6-3 win over Springfield College following a 6-3 setback against St. Norbert, Thursday at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Fla.

The Thoroughbreds took a 1-0 lead in their first game against St. Norbert. Dani DeGregory recorded a leadoff triple and was later driven home by a Lauren Fortunato sacrifice fly.  The Green Knights answered back in the top of the second, but Skidmore regained the lead as Forunato plated DeGregory for the second time with an RBI single.

St. Norbert took its first lead of the contest with two runs in the top of the fourth and after a scoreless fifth, the Green Knights extended their advantage to 6-2 with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Thoroughbreds added one run in the bottom of the seventh on a DeGregory RBI single, but that was all they could muster, as St. Norbert held on for the 6-3 win.

Cassie Fishkin took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits in four innings of work.

In the second game, Fortunato put Skidmore in front in the first with an RBI single Springfield tied it up in the second, but the Thoroughbreds added two runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Fortunato recorded her second RBI single of the game, plating Lizette Roman-Johnston and later scored on an error.

After Rachel Ball brought Springfield within one with an RBI single in the fifth inning, Skidmore added two insurances runs in the sixth, as Abby Shea delivered a two-RBI single.

Shea led the offense, going 3-for-4, while Amanda Carilli recorded her first career win on the mound.
