Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Castleton State scored two power play goals in the final 2:22 of regulation to salvage a 4-3 ECAC East hockey win over Skidmore College, Saturday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

Skidmore finishes the regular season at 4-18-3 overall and 3-14-1 in the East. The Thoroughbreds will be the seventh seed in the eight-team ECAC East playoffs and face second seed UMASS Boston in a quarterfinal on Feb. 21.  Castleton is 10-14 and 8-9 in the East. The Spartans will know their playoff seed after closing out the regular season at home Monday with a make-up game against Southern Maine.

Skidmore came out hard, taking a 1-0 lead 3:38 in when Zach Arden snuck one glove-side past Castleton goalie Ryan Mulder. Marc Cibelli and Jack Sloan assisted.  The Spartans responded on the next shift to tie it on Brian Wadsworth's second goal of the season from Bart Moran and Charles Bando at 4:39.

The Thoroughbreds scored the next two to take a 3-1 lead into the first break.  Connor Pelkey fired one home through traffic at 8:59 from Connor Van Arnam and Marc Cibelli. Anthony Bird made it 3-1 when he converted a rebound off a tough shot by Pelkey at 15:36.

Castleton's Brian Greene found the top corner on a power play for the lone goal of the second period at 10:03. Trevor Hanna and Patrick Thornton recorded the assists.

Green tied it at 17:38 with his second power play marker of the game when Hanna's cross ice pass found him all alone in front for his seventh goal of the season.

The Spartans took advantage of a late Thoroughbred penalty to win it when Derek Gingera scored the game winner off a misplayed puck with 4.6 seconds left in regulation.

Skidmore was 1-3 on the power play, while Castleton made the most of 10 power play chances, scoring three times.

Jack McDonald had 23 saves, while Mulder finished with 21 stops.
