Men's soccer shut downs RIT, 2-0

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's soccer team recorded its third straight shutout and second consecutive Liberty League clean sheet with a 2-0 win against RIT, Friday evening at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds, who have not conceded a goal at home in 327:30, move to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, while RIT falls to 3-6 and 0-2 in the conference.

Play was balanced in the first half with each team registering four shots as the two teams battled for possession in the midfield.

Skidmore threatened in the 20th minute as Augustine Okoye raced onto a perfectly threaded thru ball from Kevin Santos, but RIT goalkeeper Mark Reeves made a diving save to push Okoye's strike outside of the right post.

The Thoroughbreds took control of play in the final stages of the half before finally pulling in front in the 39th minute through Tim Sullivan's first of the season. Brennan Mitrolka swung a free kick toward the near post from the left wing and Sullivan got on the end of the cross, driving a header into the bottom corner.

Skidmore carried its momentum into the second half, doubling its lead 4:06 into the frame. Ben Caples launched a long throw in that found its way through a crowd and onto the head of Ben Poole for the easy finish into an open goal.

RIT's mounted a dangerous attack in the 73rd minute, but Mike DiCola drove his strike right into the hands of Thoroughbreds goalkeeper Eli Kisselbach. The Tigers did not generate another shot over the final 17 minutes of play, as Skidmore held on for the 2-0 win.

The Thoroughbreds outshot the Tigers 9-5 and owned a 2-0 advantage in corners. Kisselbach and Reeves each finished with two saves.

Skidmore returns to the pitch tomorrow, hosting Hobart at 3 p.m.
