Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mendunjanin hits 1000 mark in 62-48 win at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-- Skidmore College junior Aldin Mendunjanin scored 21 points and had six rebounds and three assists to lead the Thoroughbreds to a 62-48 Liberty League men's basketball win at Vassar College, Friday night.

The talented guard became the 15th player to reach the 1000-point career mark and ranks 14th on Skidmore's career scoring list with 1,010 points.

The win keeps the Thoroughbreds in the hunt for the Liberty League regular season title with a 7-1 league and 10-6 overall record. The Brewers are 1-7 and 5-12.

Mendunjanin joins teammate Connor Merrill who hit the 1000-point total earlier this season. Merrill scored five points and had four blocks against Vassar, giving him 1,067 career points. He's 10th on the Skidmore all-time scoring list.

Erik Sanders had 18 points and eight rebounds, while Martin Bedulskij, added nine points and five rebounds for the Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore started the game with a 19-2 run behind 11 points from Mendunjanin.  The Brewers cut it to five at the half, 30-25.

Vassar eventually tied the game 39-39 with 10:50 to play, but the Thoroughbreds settled down and outscored the Brewers 23-9 the rest of the way.

Skidmore dominated the boards, 41-26 and scored 14 second chance points.

"First I want to congratulate Aldin," said Skidmore coach Joe Burke.  "I think everyone who follows are program knows how special of a player and a person he is. To reach 1000 points as junior is quite the accomplishment.

"I'm proud of the team tonight, we needed to come together as a group and we did. Vassar is a good team and winning on their court is extremely difficult. We came out with tremendous energy to get a lead but Vassar responded as we knew they would. I thought in the second-half we steadied ourselves a little bit and were able to make big plays on both ends of the floor."

The Thoroughbreds travel to Bard College on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game.
