SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. --Â The Skidmore College men's hockey team was knocked off by #9 Norwich University, 3-0, on Senior Day Saturday night at Saratoga City Rink.
The Thoroughbreds move to 7-10-7 (3-8-6 ECAC East) on the season, while the Cadets improve to 15-5-3 (11-3-2).
Travis Janke, William Pelletier and Dean Niezgoda all netted goals for the Cadets. In goal, Chris Czarnota stopped all 17 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season.
Skidmore had the best scoring opportunity of the first period, nearly opening the scoring seven minutes into the contest, but
Anthony Bird's wrist shot rang off the right post.
After a scoreless first, Pelletier gave Norwich the lead at 2:08 of the second, working a give-and-go with Austin Sorowiec and tucking in a backhand for his ninth goal of the season. Janke doubled the Cadets lead four minutes later, converting on a rebound on a point shot from Shane Gorman.
The Thoroughbreds pressed on a power play late in the third period, but Czarnota turned away Bird's close-range shot to preserve the two-goal lead. Niezgoda put the game away with an empty-netter at 19:05 of the third.
Ben Freiberg made 17 saves on 19 shots over the first 29:43 for Skidmore.
Jack McDonald closed out the game with 18 saves, including 16 in the third period.
Norwich outshot Skidmore 38-17 and went 0-3 on the power play, while the Thoroughbreds were 0-6 with the man advantage.
The Thoroughbreds conclude their regular season 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at Castleton St.
