SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—
Vlad Gavrik scored a pair of third period goals to pace the Skidmore College hockey team to a 3-3 overtime tie with St. Anselm College in ECAC East hockey action Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
It was a program record seventh overtime and record sixth tie for the Thoroughbreds who are 6-7-6 overall and 2-5-5 in league play. The Hawks are 5-7-4 and 3-5-4. The teams skated to 3-3 tie in their first meeting on Nov. 16.
Freshman goalie
Jack McDonald kept Skidmore in the game early, stopping the first 11 Hawk shots before the Thoroughbreds got on the board with their second shot of the game.
Brad Schuler scored off a rebound at 11:30 from
Tony Giacin and
Vlad Gavrik. St. Anselm the broke through for two straight. Bryan Sullivan scored at 14:24 from Joe Tebano and Greg Merrill. Then Alex Pascal scored on a rebound at 16:07 with Tyler Estee and John Rogeri getting the helpers.
The teams traded chances in the second period, with St. Anselm taking advantage of a Skidmore major penalty to take a 3-1 lead at 15:49. Peter Sikalis scored the power-play goal with an assist from Mark Meads.
The Thoroughbreds struck early in the third when Gavrik sailed a wrister over the glove of Hawk goalie Nick Dries to make it 3-2 at 1:02.
Anthony Bird and Schuler assisted on the power-play goal. Gavrik tied it on another power-play goal at 5:50 from
Ondrej Krajnak and
Marc Cibelli.
The Thoroughbreds stifled a St. Anselm power play over the final 1:50 of regulation, not allowing a shot on goal.
McDonald finished with 41 saves, including 16 in the first period. Dries had 18 saves for St. Anselm, with four coming in overtime.
The Thoroughbreds host New England College on Saturday at 4 p.m., while the Hawks travel to Castleton State.
