Golfers third after Liberty League first round

First Round Results

CANTON, N.Y.-- Three golfers broke par and 13 others were within three strokes of par in round one of the 2013 Liberty League Qualifying Tournament at St. Lawrence University's Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course on Saturday.

Skidmore sits third, nine shots off first place Rochester.

The top four teams among the seven competing in the two-day event will advance to the match play championship in the spring with the winner of that tournament landing the league's automatic NCAA berth. The top team in this weekend's event will host the match play tournament.

The University of Rochester has a three stroke lead on Rensselaer with Skidmore six back after day one while St. Lawrence is clinging to the fourth and final spot, but Clarkson, NYU and Hobart are all within reach of the top four with a big day on Sunday.

Rochester shot a best-four-of –five score total of two-over par 290 on the 6689-yard, par-72 course. Three Rochester players are in the top ten led by  day one leader Nick Palladino who shot a six-under 66, going four under par on his back nine. William Mallia shot even par 72 and was tied for fourth after day one and Jona Scott shot 74 and was tied for seventh.

RPI's Brandon Mader shot three-under 69, tying SLU junior Jack Whelan for second, Aaron Schauger shot 74 and James Jackson and Craig Bokenfohr each shot 75 for RPI's 293 total while Skidmore's Makenzie Denver shot an even 72 and Tim Manwaring and William Caro were in the group tied for 10th at 75 for Skidmore's 299.

The host Saints, led by Whelan's 69, hold four by three strokes over Clarkson, which is fifth at 306 with NYU sixth at 310 and Hobart seventh at 312.
