Skidmore, Esler victorious at RPI Invitational

Tate Esler won the individual title!
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Skidmore College golf team finished first out of 17 teams with a team score of 309 in Monday's second annual RPI Collegiate Invitational at the Shaker Ridge Country Club. Additionally, Skidmore senior Tate Esler won individual medalist honors with a 74 – one better than a group three who tied for second.
 
  • The team win is Skidmore's first event title since the Manhattanville Invitational in October, 2016; nearly 10 years ago to the day.
  • For Esler, it is his second individual title after sharing the Skidmore Invitational trophy as a sophomore in 2024.
  • The Thoroughbreds won by one stroke over host Rensselaer. Esler recorded pars on his final three holes (No. 11-13), and bogeys on the final hole from players from RPI and NYU gave both Skidmore and Esler the win.
  • RPI's Zydon Yuan, NYU's Steven Liu, and Farmingdale State's Philip Connelly all tied for second with 75s.
  • Esler had birdies on 15, 4, and 8 as part of his 3-over 74.
  • Johnny Hwang tied for fifth two shots behind Esler with a 76. Hwang birdied both par-5s.
  • Jaden Cheng (79) tied for 16th, while Patrick McLaughlin rounded out the scoring group with an 80. He tied for 23rd.
  • Sam Frain led Skidmore's "B" team with a T-14 finish after firing a 78.
  • Cooper Guerriere joined McLaughlin in the six-way tie for 23rd. Chris Berry (82) finished tied for 36th.
  • The second Skidmore squad finished 10th as a unit.
  • Conditions on the course were tough with prevailing winds in the teens and gusts exceeding 30 miles per hour as well as intermittent showers.

Skidmore rounds out the fall portion of the schedule this weekend as it hosts the Skidmore Invitational at the Saratoga Spa State Park Golf Course Saturday-Sunday.
