Showdown with #1 Norwich on weekend hockey itinerary

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's ice hockey team (10-10-2, 7-7-1 ECAC East) takes to the road this weekend when it faces ECAC East opponents St. Michaels College (7-14-0, 4-10-0) and top-ranked Norwich University (18-2-0, 13-1-0).  Skidmore will face St. Michaels, Friday at 7 p.m. and Norwich, Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Thoroughbreds look to complete the season sweep of the Purple Knights, after they earned a 1-0 victory over St. Michael's on Dec.  1.  The Cadets of Norwich University, ranked first nationally, defeated Skidmore 7-3 on Nov. 30.

Skidmore hopes to build on its last game, when it shut out visiting Babson College 3-0 on the strength of freshman goalie Ben Freiberg's 21 saves. Freiberg (7-4-0) excels in conference play, 3.20 goals against average and .892 save percentage.

The Thoroughbreds bring a balanced scoring attack, as three players have eclipsed the 20-point plateau.  Leading the way for Coach Sinclair's squad is Vlad Gavrik with 24 points (9 goals, 15 assists), followed by Brad Schuler (9-12--21) and Tony Giacin (5-16--21).
