Skidmore drops first game, 3-2 to Southern Maine

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Southern Maine handed Skidmore its first loss of the season, 3-2 Saturday in ECAC East hockey at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
 
The Huskies killed all eight Thoroughbred power plays to even their record at 1-1. Skidmore is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the ECAC East.
 
Southern Maine opened the scoring with a pair of goals late in the first period.  Kelby Lorenz took advantage of a neutral zone turnover and went in alone at 15:50 from Lorne Miller.  Cole Klippenstein made it 2-0 from just inside the blue line at 18:41. 
 
Skidmore got on the board at 19:17 when David Limoges scored his second of the season off a face off from Dan Morelli to cut the lead to 2-1 at the first intermission.
 
The Thoroughbreds tied it on Jack Even's first goal of the season at 14:48 from Limoges and David Dupuis. The Huskies went back in front on a 5-3 power-play goal by Ryan Seward at 17:36 from Kelly Lorenz and Alex Pompeo.
 
Both teams had chances in the third period but Skidmore goalie Ben Freiberg and USM goalie Dylan Wells both came up big when needed. 
 
Freiberg finished with 24 saves, while Wells had 27, including 11 in the third.
 
Skidmore had a 29-27 edge in shots. The Thoroughbreds are at New England College on Nov. 8.
