Skidmore upended by Babson, 2-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- The Skidmore College men's hockey team was edged, 2-1, by Babson College in a defensive battle, Friday night at Saratoga City Rink.

The Thoroughbreds go to 2-3-1 on the season, while the Beavers improve to 5-0-0.

Thomas Park netted his second goal of the season for Skidmore and Dave Dupuis and Anders Gundersen each added an assist.

Nik Tasiopoulos recorded a multi-point game for Babson with a goal and an assist. Mike Vollmin also scored for the Beavers and Max Franklin, Matt Furey and Matt O'Neill all produced assists.

After a scoreless first period, the Beavers opened up a two-goal lead in the second.

Tasiopoulos put Babson ahead at 5:37 with a wrist shot from the left circle and Vollmin doubled the lead with a power play tally Matt O'Neill and Tasiopoulos. Vollmin collected a rebound from a blocked shot and snuck a shot inside the left post at 14:06.

Park cut the Skidmore deficit in half at 5:32 of the third, deflecting Dupuis point shot past Beavers goaltender Jamie Murray.

With their goalie pulled late in the third, the Thoroughbreds came close to finding the equalizer, but Murray made two vital saves in the game's final 45 seconds to seal the win for the Beavers.

Skidmore was outshot 32-25 and went 0-1 on the power play, while Babson went 1-3 with the man advantage. Spencer Sodokoff and Jack McDonald shared time in goal for the Thoroughbreds. Sodokoff stopped 11 of 12 shots in 25:37 of action, while McDonald made 19 stops on 20 attempts in 33:01.  Murray turned away 24 of 25 shots in the win.

Skidmore returns to the ice tomorrow night, hosting UMass Boston at 4 p.m.
