Wild third period carries Skidmore past WNE, 7-6

Springfield, Mass.— Skidmore scored four third-period goals and held on to beat Western New England University, 7-6 in a non-league game, Tuesday night.

Zach Menard and Vlad Gavrik scored two goals and had an assist each to lead the Thoroughbreds (7-6-2).  WNE falls to 6-6-0.

The Golden Bears took a 2-1 lead after the first period, extending it to 3-1 in the second. Dave Dupuis had the Thoroughbred goal.   Skidmore then scored a pair of power-play goals during a last second period WNE major. David Limoges scored at 18:40 and Menard scored at 19:15 to send the game into the third tied 3-3.  

Michael Darrar scored the first of seven third-period goals at 4:25 to give the Golden Bears at 4-3 lead. Jake Lewis tied it with his first of the season at 7:46.  WNE quickly regained the lead, 5-4,  on Brandon Stroud's goal at 8:09. 

The Thoroughbreds scored three straight and killed off a major penalty to go up 7-5. Gavrik scored a short-handed goal at 11:02, followed by Menard's second of the game at 12:26.  Gavrik's second of the game was an empty-netter at 18:38. With the goalie out, WNE scored one last time on Brian Prost's goal at 19:52 for the 7-6 final.  

Ben Freiberg improved to 4-1 in goal for the Thoroughbreds, stopping 32 shots.
Skidmore is at Williams College on Saturday for its final non-league game of the season.
