Skidmore returns to the ice against #9 Plattsburgh

Glens Falls, N.Y.--  A pair of early  goals set the tone as the nationally-ranked No. 9 Plattsburgh State
hockey team defeated Skidmore, 7-1, Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The non-conference matchup was the first college hockey game to be hosted at the Glens Falls Civic Center since Global Spectrum entered the building in 2008.

An early Plattsburgh power play set the stage for Jared Docking's sixth of the season to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at the 3:02 mark of the first period.

Docking struck again on the power play at 8:32 to give Plattsburgh an early two-goal lead.

Mark Constantine made it 3-0 in favor of Plattsburgh State (9-4-1, 6-1-1 SUNYAC) when Connor Gorman's pass from down low found Constantine in front for his sixth of the year at 13:49.

Andrew Smith opened the scoring in the second period at the 3:52 mark to give the Cardinals a four-goal cushion.

The Thoroughbreds (5-6-2, 4-4-1 ECAC East) broke through catching Plattsburgh in a line change. The puck deflected off a Plattsburgh defender and Tim Colvin made the Cardinals pay, coming in all alone and beating Mathieu Cadieux for his first tally of the year at 8:31 of the second.

Plattsburgh scored the final three goals as Jake Mooney scored late in the second to stretch the lead to 5-1. Dillan Fox scored at 11:29 of the final stanza and  Zach Popp tallied his first collegiate goal at 12:54.

The Cardinals outshot the Thoroughbreds, 38-28. Plattsburgh went 2-for-3 on the power play while Skidmore finished the night 0-for-4.

Ben Freiberg recorded 31 stops in the loss for Skidmore, dropping to 2-1-0. Cadieux improves to 6-4-1 on the year with 27 saves for the Cardinals.

The Thoroughbreds host SUNY Potsdam on Saturday at 4 p.m.
