Thoroughbreds skate past UMB 4-2

Boston, Mass.—The Skidmore College hockey team salvaged a weekend road split with a  4-2 ECAC East win over UMASS Boston, Saturday evening.
 
Colin Bessey had 42 saves in net for the Thoroughbreds who improve to 8-11-2 and 7-7 in the ECAC East. The Beacons are 10-8-3 and right behind Skidmore with a 6-7-1 league mark.
 
Skidmore grabbed an early 1-0 lead at 6:04 of the first period when Tyler Doremus scored a power-play goal from Nick Dupuis.  The Beacons tied it late to leave it 1-1 at the end of the first.
 
Doremus set-up Vlad Gavrik at 3:45 of the second to put the Thoroughbreds back in front 2-1.  UMB managed to tie it again for a 2-2 score at the second break.
 
After end-to-end skating and several chances by both teams, Dupuis put the Thoroughbreds in front for good at 16:06 with his sixth of the season from Doremus and Brad SchulerBrendan Cottam added the empty-netter at 19:50 for the 4-2 win.
 
Bessey had his biggest game of the season with 18 saves in the second and 17 in the third.
 
Skidmore will host #1 Norwich on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga City Rink.
