Skidmore stays hot with 9-1 win over St. Michael’s

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.—One day after taking out the nation's top team, the Skidmore College hockey team continued to roll with a 9-1 ECAC East win over St. Michael's College at the Saratoga City Rink.

There was no letdown for the Thoroughbreds (10-11-2, 9-7 ECAC East) who beat #1 Norwich University 3-2 Friday night.   Skidmore never let the Purple Knights (6-14-2, 3-12-1 East) in the game, taking an 8-0 lead before a late second period SMC power-play goal.

The team is getting hot at the right time of the season with a three straight wins and a 6-2-1 record over the last eight games.  Skidmore has a narrow one-point hold on the fourth and final playoff home ice slot and will close out the regular season with a pair of home-and-home games next weekend against second place Castleton.  The Thoroughbreds host the Spartans on Friday at 7 p.m. and then close out the regular season in Rutland on Saturday.

The Thoroughbreds struck first when Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo./Iowa Outlaws) scored his team-high 12th of the season at 3:53 from Brad Schuler (Delran, N.J./Hamilton Red Wings) and Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I./Pomfret).  Giacin's faceoff win set-up the second Skidmore goal, a rocket from the point by Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass./Springfield Falcons) at 11:08.  Malakorn also assisted. Erik Nilsson (Stockholm, Sweden/Gunnery) made it 3-0 on a breakaway from Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Que./Worcester Acad.) and Dave Dupuis (Kuujjuaq, Que./Kent School) at 16:51.

Skidmore continued to dominate in the second period, scoring twice in the first three minutes for a 5-0 lead. Giacin picked-up his second of the game from Malakorn and Jack Walsh (North Reading, Mass./Andover Acad.) at 1:43, chasing Purple Knight goalie Mike Dizgun.  Aaron Beck (Maribel, Wisc./Lake Forest Acad.) made it 5-0 at 2:56 with Tim Colvin (Brunswick, Ohio/Hartford Wolfpack) and Anders Gunderson (Marblehead, Mass./Northwood) assisting.

The Thoroughbreds scored another quick pair later in the second to extend the lead to 7-0. Vlad Gavrik (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Hebron Acad.) found the net at 12:13 from Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass./N.H. Monarchs) and Giacin.  David Limoges (Saint-Hippolyte, Que./Albany Acad.) lit the lamp 51 seconds later with Dupuis assisting.  Limoges made it 8-0 at 15:22 from Dupuis and Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass./Lawrence Acad.).

St. Michael's finally found the net with a Connor Logan power-play goal at 19:43 for an 8-1 Thoroughbred lead at the second break.

Gavrik scored the lone third period goal at 12:30 from Essaris and Doremus.

Giacin finished with two goals and two assists, while Dupuis and Malakorn had three assists each.

Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity-Pawling) had another big game in net. He played the first two periods, stopping 14-of-15 shots. John Bienkowski (Lexington, Mass./Hoosac School) stopped all six shots he saw in the third period.  Dizgun was credited with 9 saves, while Eric McGuirk had 17 saves over 38:17 for St. Michael's.
