Skidmore knocks off #1 Norwich, 3-2

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— Senior goaltender Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity Pawling) stopped 38 shots to lead the Skidmore College hockey team to a 3-2 win over #1 Norwich University in ECAC East action, Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The  win moves the Thoroughbreds (9-11-2, 8-7 ECAC) into a tie for the fourth and final home ECAC East playoff slot with three games to play.  The Cadets (18-2-1, 13-2) hold a two-point lead over second place Castleton.

After a scoreless first half of the game, Skidmore's Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo./New England Huskies) converted a rebound for his sixth goal of the season to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead at 9:41 of the second. Chris Powers (Melrose, Mass./Northwood) and Bessey assisted.

Bessey wasn't the only Thoroughbred making saves.  At 18:10 mark of the second period, Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass./Lawrence Academy) cleared the puck off the goal line after a Bessey stop to keep it 1-0 after two.

The teams traded chances in the third, with the Cadets tying the game at 11:01 when Shane Gorman collected a rebound off the glass to score his eighth of the season from Pasha Kozhokin and Colin Mulvey.  Skidmore responded a minute later when Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo./N. Iowa Outlaws) backhanded a pass in front to Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I./Pomfret) who beat Norwich goalie Chris Czarnota for his third goal of the season at 12:17.

A too-many-men penalty on the Thoroughbreds at 18:22 gave Norwich a late power play and a two-man advantage with Czarnota out.  Jack Walsh (North Reading, Mass./Andover Acad.) was able to clear the puck from his own zone into the empty net to make it 3-1 with 19:18 to play.

The Cadets did get the power-play goal from Christophe Paquet at 19:51, but Skidmore held on for the final nine seconds for the win.

Bessey had 16 saves of his 38 saves in the first period.   Czarnota finished with 13 saves, losing for the first time this season.

Skidmore will host St. Michael's College on Saturday at 4 p.m., while Norwich travels to Castleton State.
