Thoroughbreds take on #2 Norwich

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— Second ranked Norwich University scored the game's final four goals to remain unbeaten with a 7-3 ECAC East hockey win over Skidmore College, Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The loss snaps a five-game unbeaten streak for the Thoroughbreds who are 4-3-2 overall , 3-3-1 in ECAC East play. The Cadets improve to 8-0 and 6-0 in league play.

Skidmore took a quick 1-0 lead on the first shot of the game, when Ondrej Krajnak's shot trickled past Norwich goalie Matic Marinsek at 1:02 of the first.  Erik Nilsson had the assist.  

Later in the period, the Cadets then scored three goals in less than four minutes to grab a 3-1 lead.  Travis Janke scored off a rebound at 12:29 from Tory Allan and Colin Mulvey at 12:29. Ben Morgan made it 2-1 with his first collegiate goal at 13:46 from Dean Niezgoda and Shane Gorman at 13:46. Pier-Olivier Contoir scored just after a Thoroughbred penalty expired at 16:25 from Janke and Bryce Currier at 16:25 for the 3-1 lead at the first break.

Skidmore came out hard in the second period to tie the game with a pair of goals 12 seconds apart. David Limoges scored a power-play goal at 2:44 from Nilsson and Zach Menard and then David Dupuis tied it off the faceoff from Limoges and Brendan Cottam at 2:56.  Norwich regained the lead at 8:06 when Kyle Thomas scored on a two-on-one break that started with a Marinsek save at the other end. Chris Duszynski and Corey Hale assisted.  The Cadets went up 5-3 when Cotnoir converted a Thoroughbred turnover for his second of the game at 12:55 from Thomas.

Norwich closed out the scoring in the third period when Janke scored at 14:40 of the third period from Hale and Tory Allan.   Niezgoda added a short-handed goal at 18:45.

Skidmore used three goalies. Spencer Sodokoff stopping 10 shots in the first 18:45 and Brad Cray had 20 shots over 42:20. Ben Freiberg played the final 1:15.  Marinsek had 13 saves for the Cadets.

The Thoroughbreds host St. Michael's College at 4 p.m. Saturday, while Norwich travels to Castleton State also at 4.
