Rochester, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College volleyball team went 2-1 in the University of Rochester Invitational. The Thoroughbreds beat Mass College of the Liberal Arts 3-1 (25-15, 25-11, 18-25, 25-13) and Allegheny 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 23-25, 25-18) before losing to a tight match to Rochester 3-2 (26-28, 25-27, 29-27, 25-23, 8-15).
Skidmore is 5-2 and will play in the Union Invitational on Sept. 16.
In the first match, Kelley Vershbow had 12 kills and a ,550 hitting percentage. Setter Mallory Mendelsohn had 28 assists, while Olivia Glassman added nine kills and four aces.
Against Allegheny, Vershbow and Carolyn Bottelier had double/doubles. Vershbow had 12 kills, 16 digs and four aces, while Bottelier had 13 kills and 16 digs. Mendelsohn was tough again with 46 assists and Sam Friedman chipped-in a team-high 32 digs
After spotting Rochester two sets, the Thoroughbreds battled back to force a fifth set, before losing the tight match. Vershbow (13 kills, 12 digs), Mendelsohn (49 assists, 10 digs), and Bottelier (12 kills, 11 digs) all had double/doubles. Corinne Palmer had 12 kills, four blocks and a .303 hitting percentage and Elise Finnerty had 13 kills, five blocks, and a .500 hitting percentage. Glassman had 10 digs and five aces.
