Box Score
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— The Skidmore College hockey team gave defending NCAA Division III national champion Norwich University all it could handle before losing a tight 3-1 ECAC East game, Saturday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The Cadets, ranked fourth nationally, remain in first place in the ECAC East with a 13-1-3 league and 15-5-3 overall record. The Thoroughbreds are 8-7-2 and 9-12-2 overall.
The teams traded goals in a bizarre 1-1 first period, that featured only two whistles in the first 12 minutes of play, but took nearly 45 minutes to complete because of a broken rink door that caused a 20 minute delay.
Skidmore scored first off a turnover in the neutral zone.
Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo./Iowa Outlaws) fed
Vlad Gavrik (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Hebron Acad.) who converted for his sixth goal of the season at 12:05 of the first. Norwich tied it right away on Emmond Bell's third of the year at 13:49, from Pasha Kozhokin and Chris Gour.
The teams continued the torrid pace in the second period, with few whistles and end-to-end skating. Both teams traded chances, but outstanding defensive play on both sides kept the game tied.
Kyle Thomas gave Norwich a 2-1 lead and with what proved to be the game winner, a power-play goal at 9:16 of the third from Scott Schroeder and Pier-Oliver Cotnoir. Scott Schroeder added an empty net power-play goal with eight seconds to play for the 3-1 final.
The Cadets were 2-5 on the power play with all five chances coming in the third period. The Thoroughbreds were 0-2.
Andrew Ross had 23 saves in net for Skidmore, while Parker Carroll improved to 8-0-2 with 19 saves for Norwich.
Skidmore will close out the regular season on the road next weekend with games at Middlebury and Williams.
