Schenectady, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder/forward
Kelly Blackhurst scored four goals and added two assists to lead #6 Skidmore to a 6-0 victory over Union College in a Liberty League field hockey game at Frank Bailey Field Friday.
The Thoroughbreds clinch the Llberty League regular season title and improve to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in league play. The Dutchwomen fall to 2-12 overall and 0-5 in the league. Blackhurst tied her own school record with 10 points in a game (two points per goal for field hockey). The point total has been reached seven times in Skidmore history and twice this year by Blackhurst.
The Thoroughbreds opened the scoring at 27:16 when
Lauren Tobias notched her 11th of the season. She got a pass from
Kelly Blackhurst tight in the crease to give Skidmore the 1-0 lead. Just 42 seconds later, Blackhurst scored her 17th of the year. Tobias returned the favor with a pass to Blackhurst, who shot it in from just over five yards out.
With just one second remaining on the clock in the first half, Blackhurst scored her second of the day. She broke in to the left of the goaltender and took a long drive that deflected off a Union defender to give the guests a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The Thoroughbreds added to the lead at 54:09 when Blackhurst scored her 20th on an unassisted goal close by and
Sam Skott made it 5-0 at 55:55 with her sixth of the year. She took a pass from Blackhurst and tucked it in close behind the goalie.
Haley McDougall made five saves in over 68 minutes of work while
Amy Beck played 1:37 in the net.
Molly McCune stopped 20 for Union. Skidmore outshot Union, 31-8 and had an 11-3 advantage in corners.
"Kelly Blackhurst was absolutely dominant in the offensive end" said coach Beth Hallenbeck. "Annie Rosencrans, Lauren Tobias and Katie Flowers also had strong performances for the Thoroughbreds."
The Dutchwomen return to action Saturday to host St. Lawrence at 2 p.m. Skidmore is at Vassar Saturday at 2 p.m.
