Saratoga Springs, N.Y. -- Fifth ranked Williams College scored the final 16 points of the first half on the way to an 84-61 non-league men's basketball win over Skidmore College, Tuesday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 9-8, while the Ephs are 18-1.
Skidmore hung with Williams for most of the first half, leading by as many as seven. The Ephs battled back to take their first lead since the opening basket, 25-23 on a James Wang lay-up with 9:14 to play. Up 33-30 with 4:31 to play, Williams closed the half with the 16-0 run for a 49-30 lead at the intermission.
The one-two combination of Wang and Troy Whittington combined for 40 of the 49 Eph first half points, with Whittington going 8-9 from the floor and 8-9 from the line for 24 points.
Williams opened the second half with a 14-6 run to put the game out of reach.
Terron Victoria led Skidmore with 13 points and five rebounds.
Gerard O'Shea added seven points, four steals, and three assists. The Thoroughbreds forced 16 Williams turnovers.
Whittington finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds. The nation's leading shooter, went 10-11 from the floor. Wang ended the night with 20 points and a team-high four assists. Hayden Rooke-Ley had a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with four points.
“We knew coming in that this was going to be a very difficult challenge" said coach
Joe Burke. "In my opinion Williams is as good as there is in the country and they played that way tonight. I was proud that we battled and played hard till the final whistle”
“I told the guys after the game that we are striving to be great here. We just played a great team so now that know where we have to get to. We have to come in tomorrow and get better. We are excited that we can focus on the Liberty League going forward”
Skidmore returns to Liberty League action on Friday at home against Vassar College in an 8 p.m. start.
