Volleyball goes 3-1 at Ithaca

Ithaca, N.Y.—The Skidmore College volleyball team went 3-1 at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Thoroughbreds beat Geneseo 3-1, lost 3-0 to Baptist Bible, edged Union 3-2, and finished with a 3-1 win over Rutgers-Newark to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Skidmore opened with a 25-20, 16-25, 25-20, 25-15 win over Geneseo. Meredith Palmer had 10 kills and eight blocks. Kelley Vershbow added 12 kills and 16 digs and Sam Friedman had 20 digs. Setter Mallory Mendelsohn contributed 39 assists and six aces, while Carolyn Botterlier had a double/double with 11 kills and 15 digs.

In the second match, Baptist Bible handed the Thoroughbreds their lone tournament loss 25-19. 25-18, 25-23. Vershbow had a 23 kills, 11 digs and a .356 hitting percentage. Palmer added 8 kills and three blocks, while Mendelsohn had 18 assists.

Against Union, Skidmore won the first two games 25-15, 25-18 before allowing the Dutchwomen to take the next two 25-20, 28-26. The Thoroughbreds won the deciding fifth game 15-10. Palmer had 16 kills and six blocks, while Vershbow had 23 kills and 11 digs. Friedman had a match-high h33 digs, while Mendelsohn chipped in 52 assists and three aces. Bottelier had her second double/double with 11 kills and 12 digs.

Skidmore closed out the tournament with a 25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22 win over Rutgers-Newark. Palmer was sharp again with 15 kills, a .462 hitting pct., and four blocks. Medelsohn had 31 assists and Erika Warren added 14 digs.

The Thoroughbreds return to the court Sept. 17 at the Union College Invitational.
