Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore ice hockey team tied Southern Maine, 3-3 in Saturday afternoon's ECAC East matchup at the Saratoga City Rink. The Thoroughbreds move to 7-12-2 overall and 6-7-2 in the league while the Huskies are now 8-10-3 overall and 5-7-3 league.
Skidmore got out to an early 1-0 lead when
Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass./Lawrence Academy) put home a rebound for his seventh goal of the season at the 2:10 mark in the first. Southern Maine would tie it up on a goal from Dan Rautenberg at the 10:05 mark, but freshman
Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I.) gave the lead back to the Thoroughbreds late in the first, when he netted a power-play goal at the 19:45 mark.
Skidmore was able to hold the one-goal advantage through most of the second period and killed off three penalties, but the Huskies tied it up late in the period when Rautenberg beat Thoroughbred keeper Coline Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity-Pawling) for his second goal of the game at the 18:18 mark.

Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass./Kent School) gave Skidmore the lead back in the third when he took a pass from
Tim Daley (Wilton, N.Y./CD Selects) and beat Southern Maine goalie
Tim Gerrish at the 10:16 mark. The Huskies would tie it up though when they took advantage of a power-play and David Nies scored at the 14:36 mark to make it a 3-3 game. The Thoroughbreds killed a 5-on-3 Southern Maine power play as the teams battled the rest of the period to a tie at the end of regulation.
Neither team could get much going in the overtime period, Skidmore got off the only shot as the teams finished with a 3-3 tie.
The Thoroughbreds outshot the Huskies 34-27 as
Colin Bessey made 24 saves for Skidmore.
Tim Gerrish picked up the decision for Southern Maine, making 19 saves on 20 shots over the final 45 minutes in relief of starter Mason St. Hilaire, who made 12 saves on 14 shots in the first period.
The teams combined for 29 penalty minutes on 13 penalties as the Thoroughbreds finished 1-for-3 on the power play, compared to 1-for-6 for the Huskies.
Skidmore returns to action on Feb. 12 at St. Michael's.
