Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team had 11 different players score as they defeated Vassar, 74-61 at the Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Thoroughbreds remain in a three-way tie for first place in the Liberty League.
 
Skidmore improves to 8-4 in the league and 15-8 overall, while the Brewers fall to 0-11 league and 2-20 overall, dropping their 20th consecutive game.
Jon Douglas (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) led four Thoroughbreds in double-figures with 11 points and 
Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass./Medfield), 
Gerard O'Shea(West Sand Lake, N.Y./Averill Park) and 
John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) each added 10.
 
The teams battled throughout the first half as Vassar took advantage their free throws in the first half and led by as many as eight points. The first half included six lead changes and four ties with Skidmore using an 8-0 run to take a six-point lead into the half.
After trading baskets through the first five minutes of the second half, the Thoroughbreds extended their lead to 11 on back-to-back three-pointers from Douglas and Mantas. The Brewers hung tough and got the lead down to one on a jumper from Caleb McGraw at the 5:07 mark, but Skidmore answered back with a 3-pointer from O'Shea and outscored Vassar 14-2 over the final 4:45 to seal up the victory.
John Donnelly led the way for the Brewers, scoring a game-high 21 points, including 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line, to go along with eight rebounds and four steals. McGraw added 15 points and Jon Herzog chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.
The Thoroughbred bench outscored Vassar 40-5 and held the advantage in second chance points, 16-5. Skidmore hit 14 three-pointers compared to four for the Brewers, but Vassar held an advantage at the free-throw line, finishing 21-for-24, while the Thoroughbreds were 10-of-17.
Skidmore resumes play on Friday, Feb. 19, when they take on St. Lawrence in a battle of first-place teams.
