Box Score

South Burlington, Vt. - The Skidmore College ice hockey team (8-12-2, 7-7-2 ECAC East) defeated St. Michael's (4-14-3, 2-11-3 ECAC East, 2-1-1 N E-10), 5-2  at Cairns Arena on Friday.

For the Thoroughbreds, sophomore Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) tallied the first goal of the night, while senior Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass.) netted two, freshman Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass.) recorded the game-winning goal in the third frame, and senior Tim Daley (Wilton, N.Y.) earned a goal. Sophomore net minder Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas) set aside 19 shots in the contest.

For Saint Michael's, senior assistant captain Tim Geverd (Horsham, Pa./N.H. Junior Monarch/University of Vermont) and sophomore Reave MacKinnon (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Winnipeg Saints) tallied the two goals of the contest against Skidmore, while junior net minder Brendan Rimmer (Newbury, Mass./Pingree School) recorded 31 saves in the game.

Both teams battled for the first point of the game until the eighth minute when Thoroughbred's Doremus netted a puck from the blue line that slipped right over the shoulder of Purple Knights' net minder Rimmer. Assisting Doremus in the first goal of the night was junior Alex Mykolenko (Kharkiv, Ukraine) and Menard. Purple Knights' defenseman Geverd had an answer two minutes later, netting a puck on a breakout play with a one-man advantage with help from junior Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) and freshman Alex Davidson (South Burlington, Vt./Saint Paul's School).

Early in the second period, Czerkowicz helped the Thoroughbreds take the lead after connecting with sophomore Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.). The Purple Knights caught Skidmore snoozing, as a slow moving puck last played by MacKinnon five-holed the Thoroughbred's goalie to even the game two-all. MacKinnon had a chance with minutes remaining in the second frame to give the Purple Knights the lead, but was unable to slip a puck through the legs of Thoroughbreds' net minder Ross. The Purple Knights were caught in their defensive zone for a majority of the period but were able to keep Skidmore from taking the lead, as Rimmer tallied 12 saves in the frame.

Third period kicked off like all the others, as the Thoroughbreds took an early lead on an angled shot by Menard, assisted by sophomore Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Quebec). Unlike the other periods, it was Skidmore who scored the follow-up goal, putting the Purple Knights at a two goal deficit on a Daley goal, with assists coming from senior Chris Webb (Holliston, Mass.) and sophomore Jonathan Watanabe (San Diego, Calif.). Czerkowicz expanded the Thoroughbred's advantage with a close-range goal from play by Dupuis and Menard.

Skidmore will return to action tomorrow at Norwich.
