Skidmore men advance to Hilton Garden Inn Championship

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College men's basketball team ran past Bard College, 87-48, Saturday in the first round of the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational at Williamson Sports Center. The Thoroughbreds move into Sunday's 3 p.m. championship game against Utica College, a 94-90 winner in OT over Thomas College. Thomas and Bard will play at 1 p.m.

Skidmore is 4-1, while Bard falls to 0-7.

The Thoroughbreds led from start to finish, getting all 14 dressed players in action. Skidmore built a 44-17 lead and extended the lead by as many as 40 in the second half.

Jeff Altimar led five Thoroughbreds in double figures with 15 points and four assists in 22 minutes. Terron Victoria had 12 points, four assists, and two steals and Kyle Clark dropped 11 points. Brian Lowry and Melvis Langyintuo both scored in double figures with 13 and 10 respectively. Gerard O'Shea contributed five steals and three assists.

Skidmore's bench outscored Bard 45-10 and the Thoroughbreds scored 31 points off 22 Bard Raptor turnovers.

Matt Shubert was Bard's top scorer with 15 points, while Christian Marghella scored 10.

“We constantly are talking about improving on the defensive of end,” said Skidmore coach Joe Burke. “I thought we took a few steps forward with that tonight.

“Offensively I thought we did a good job sharing the ball. We looked for each other and as a result we took some good shots. We have to regroup quickly and get ready for tomorrow. Bard played 5 guards at times today and tomorrow will be a completely different story. Utica will put tremendous size on the court. It will be a very big challenge for us.”

In the second game, Thomas (1-4) came from 17-points down with 4:36 to play to force overtime. Trailing 73-56, the Terriers outscored Utica (4-1) 30-13 over the rest of the way to send the game into an extra period. Franklin Salvador had the biggest shots for Thomas, hitting a late three to keep it close and another at the buzzer to tie it.

The Pioneers scored the first four points of the overtime and held Thomas off for the 94-90 win.

Utica's James Patterson hit 21 of 24 free throws, including six of six in the overtime and 17 of 19 total in the second half. Patterson finished with 27 points, four steals and four assists. Jeff Ward had a double/double for the Pioneers with 13 points and 14 rebounds,

Jarrad DeVaughn and Stanley Greene Jr. had 18 each for Thomas. Isiah Brathwaite added 17.

The teams combined for 60 fouls and 85 free throw attempts. Utica hit 40 of 56 from the line, while Thomas was 25 of 29. The Terriers had four players foul out.
