Saratoga Springs, N.Y.—Buffalo State advanced to the championship game of the Skidmore Invitational Hockey Tournament with a 4-0 win over the host Thoroughbreds, Saturday afternoon at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The Tigers (5-2-1) will face the University of Southern Maine in Sunday's championship game at 4 p.m. Skidmore (1-3) will play Elmira College in the 1 p.m. consolation game. Southern Maine (1-2-1) and Elmira (4-4-2) tied 3-3, but the Huskies advance to the championship with a 2-0 shootout win.
In the first game, Buffalo goalie Alan Fritch was a game-time decision to get his first start of the season and he made the most of it with 24 saves for the shutout. Fritch got the nod when announced starter Kevin Carr had equipment issues prior to the opening faceoff.
Buffalo took a 1-0 lead when Trevor McKinney took the faceoff from Justin Knee and went end to end for a short-handed goal at 17:42.
The Tigers made it 2-0 in the second when Knee scored a power-play goal from McKinney at 7:33.
Buffalo added a pair of goals in the third from Mac Balson and McKinney for the 4-0 final.
Colin Bessey had 12 saves for the Thoroughbreds over the first 51:24, with
John Bienkowski stopping two shots over the final 8:36.
In the second game, Elmira held a 47-31 shot advantage, but couldn't solve Southern Maine goalie Braely Torris.
The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Zach Joy and Jon Rutt. The Soaring Eagles took advantage of a procedure penalty to get on the board :58 into the second on Darcy Vaillancourt's sixth goal of the season. Elmira tied it on another power-play goal at 5:00 by Brendan Sanders.
In the third, Kevin Willer put the Soaring Eagles on top for the first time with his eighth goal of the season at 1:16. Southern Maine hung in the game, tying it on Rutt's second goal of the game, a power-play score at 13:42.
Both teams had chances in the overtime, but it was Torris coming up big with a save on a two-on-one with 4:06 to play in the OT.
The shootout was all Southern Maine with Paul Conter and Craig Perham scoring and Torris saving three shots with the fourth going wide.
Torris finished with 44 saves, including four in the overtime. Elmira's Darren McDonald had 28 saves.
