Box Score

Cobleskill, N.Y.— Jeff Altimar led all scorers with 17 points to lead the Skidmore College men's basketball team to a 79-72 win over SUNY Cobleskill, Wednesday night at Lorio Gym. It was the season opener for the Thoroughbreds, while Cobleskill falls to 0-2.

“Our kids played really hard and found a way to persevere in the end against a talented and well coached Cobleskill team,” said Skidmore coach Joe Burke. “I have known (Cobleskill) coach Allen for awhile and he has that program doing great things. We were really fortunate to get a quality win on the road in a challenging environment.”

The teams were whistled for a combined 50 fouls, with Skidmore connecting on 26 of 37 free throws for a 70.3 percentage. The Tigers struggled from the line, shooting 48.3 percent on 14 of 29 attempts.

“Our kids refused to give in,” Burke added. “They were very athletic and we needed to be tough to compete and I thought our guys did that, especially down the stretch. It was a total team effort.”

Also for Skidmore, John Mantas had a team-high nine rebounds and Gerard O'Shea had eight points and seven assists.

The Thoroughbreds are at Tufts University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
