Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Hamilton defenseman Brandon Broad (West Seneca, N.Y./Nichols) scored with 25 seconds left in regulation to give the Continentals a 4-3 win over Skidmore College in an ECAC East/NESCAC cross over game at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The Thoroughbreds are 7-10 overall and 6-5 in league play, while Hamilton improves to 8-6-2 and 5-5-1. The game was the fourth straight one-goal game for Skidmore and the ninth of the season.
Skidmore jumped in front early when Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass./Kent School) scored deflected Zach Menard's (Burlington, Mass./NH Monarchs) past Hamilton goalie Scott Hefferman at 2:10 of the first. The Continentals tied it when Chris Lorenc (Clifton, N.J./Wyoming Seminary) scored an unassisted short-handed goal after stealing the puck in the Thoroughbred zone.
Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I./Pomfret) put Skidmore up 2-1 with his first collegiate goal, a power-play score at 1:34 of the second from Alex Riccio (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/Northwood). Tom Chiappetta (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Gunnery) tied it with a power-play goal at 9:38 from Lorenc and Joe Buicko (Altamont, N.Y./Hotchkiss) to leave it 2-2 after two.
Hamilton took its first lead of the game at 2:46 of the third when Lorenc scored off a scramble in front of Thoroughbred goalie Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity-Pawling). Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) tied it for Skidmore at 10:09 from Riccio and Jack Walsh (North Reading, Mass./Andover Acad.).
With the Continentals putting pressure on in the final minute, Broad scored the game winner from Ryan Guerin and Anthony Scarpino at 19:45.
Bessey finished with 30 saves, while Hefferman stopped 28 shots.
Skidmore is at Conn College on Friday at 7 p.m.
