Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College hockey team lost to 9th-ranked Amherst 2-1 on Friday night at the Saratoga City Rink.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 7-9 overall and 6-4 in the league, while the Lord Jeffs improve to 11-2-2 overall and 6-2-2 in league play.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo./New England Huskies) got Skidmore on the board first when he got a pass in front of the net and beat Amherst goalie Cole Anderson at the 10:29 mark of the second period. The Thoroughbreds almost made it 2-0 but Anderson robbed Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/Northwood School) on a breakaway late in the second period.
Eddie Effinger led the Lord Jeffs' charge in the third and tied it up when he found the puck in a crowd in front of the net and beat Skidmore keeper Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity-Pawling) 8:13 into the third. Effinger would score his second goal of them game and give Amherst the 2-1 lead when he scored on a power play at the 15:26 mark of the third period.
Bessey made 19 saves on 21 shots for the Thoroughbreds and Anderson finished with 18 saves for the Lord Jeffs.
Skidmore returns to action tomorrow, when they host Hamilton at 4 p.m.
