Cortland, N.Y.—The Skidmore College volleyball team opened the season with 2-2 split at the Cortland Red Dragon Invitational.
The Thoroughbreds started with an exciting 3-2 win over Fredonia (26-24, 26-24, 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 16-14). The team then lost to the University of Rochester 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-25).
In the second bracket semifinals, Skidmore beat Nazareth 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 26-24) before losing to Clarkson in the final 3-0 (16-25, 22-25, 17-25).
Thoroughbred senior libero Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) was selected to the all-tournament team for the second straight year. She averaged 6.47 digs per game for the tournament.
Match by match highlights:
Fredonia: Junior middle hitter Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) had 17 kills and 6 blocks and Dinsdale had 33 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kelley Vershbow contributed 14 kills and 15 digs, while junior setter Becca Ormsby racked-up 26 assists.
Rochester: Palmer finished with 13 kills, while Dinsdale had 26 digs and Ormsby added 16 assists.
Nazareth: Dinsdale led all players with 18 digs and freshman outside hitter Emory Wonham contributed nine kills, a .316 hitting pct, and 10 digs. Vershbow also had nine kills and Ormsby had three aces to go along with 16 assists.
Clarkson: Dinsdale finished strong with 20 digs and three aces. Ormsby was solid again with 12 assists, while Vershbow had 11 kills.
Skidmore (2-2) travels to the Union Invitational on Friday.
