GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore wing Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) scored at 1:55 of overtime to give the University of Southern Maine a 3-2 victory over Skidmore College in an ECAC Men?s East game Friday night a the USM Ice Arena.

The win extends the Huskies? unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) and lifts them above .500 at 10-9-1 overall and 7-6-1 in league play. The Thoroughbreds drop to 10-9-0 overall and 6-8-0 in league action.

Joy broke up a Skidmore rush at the USM blue line, collecting the loose puck in center ice for a partial breakaway. With a defenseman draped all over him, Joy's initial shot from 25-feet was stopped by Skidmore freshman goalie Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas). Joy, who lost his feet on the shot, was able to poke the rebound in while sliding into the goalie and the net.

The teams traded goals late in the first period to skate to a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes. Sophomore Joe Melnyk (Rotterdam, N.Y.) put Skidmore ahead redirecting a drive from senior Mike Gibbons (Braintree, Mass.) past USM senior goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine) at 15:34.

USM tied the game with a power-play marker from sophomore Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) who tipped home a shot from the blue line by Conter 14 seconds before the end of the period.

Sophomore Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine) had the only goal of the middle period for Skidmore, stuffing a wrap-around shot past Gilbert?s left foot for an unassisted tally.

Gilbert finished the night stopping 31 of 33 shots he faced while Ross was credited with 28 saves.

Southern Maine will be in action Saturday (4:00 p.m.) when it entertains Castleton State College. Skidmore also plays on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) at Salem State College.
