Union men edge Skidmore in 85-82 thriller

Senior forward Drew Desmaris (St. James, N.Y.) hit a lay-up while being fouled and connected on the free-throw with three seconds remaining in the game as the Union College men's basketball team slipped by Skidmore College, 85-82, Tuesday evening at the Viniar Athletic Center.
 
The win puts Union at an even 4-4 record in the Liberty League and 11-7 overall. Skidmore falls to 7-12 and 2-6
 
In the first half, Union gained a seven point lead off of two foul shots by Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) lead before senior Nick Ciresi (Kings Park, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left to put Union up by 10, 43-33, at the half. 
 
The Dutchmen built a 15-point advantage mid-way through the second half but Skidmore would go on a 19-4 run with 4:57 left to tie the score.

Altimar tied the score when he took a pass from inside and set up to calmly hit his sixth three of the game to put the score at 82-82 with 14.4 seconds left. 

Union charged up the court and quickly got the ball into big-man Desmaris, who put the lay-up in and hit the free-throw for the 85-82 win..
 
Skidmore was clutch from behind-the-arc, hitting 13-33 including nine in the second half. Union was consistent from the field throughout, hitting 52.5% (31-59) from the field with 10 coming from downtown.
 
Altimar had the hot-shooting hand as he hit 7-15 with six from long range, ending with 23 points. Freshman Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y./Bishop Maginn) contributed 14 points while Douglas added 10.
 
Madej finished with 22 points with Desmaris recording 21. 

Skidmore will continue conference play at Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Feb. 6-7.
