Saratoga Springs, N.Y..-- Zach Kohn scored 1:03 into overtime to lead the Nichols Bison to a 3-2 win over Skidmore College in the Skidmore Invitational semifinals, Saturday at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
The Bison will face Brockport for the tournament championship on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles beat the University of New England 5-0 in the other semifinal. The Thoroughbreds and Nor'Easters face off at 1 p.m.
Skidmore is 2-2, while Nichols improves to 4-1-1. Brockport is 3-5, UNE is 0-3.
Nichols took an early 1-0 lead on Will Munson's first goal of the season at 1:13. Skidmore tied it when
Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass./Lawrence Academy) scored from
Alex Mykolenko and
Hunter Thayer (Shelburne, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) at 11:23.
The Thoroughbreds took a 2-1 lead when
Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo./New England Huskies) scored a power-play goal at 4:27 of the second from
Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Quebec/Worcester Acad.) and
Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass./Kent School).
Nichols came out strong in the third when Munson scored his second of the game 59 seconds in to tie it 2-2.
Kohn scored the game-winner after he buried a pass from Munson for his team-high seventh goal of the season.
Nichols goalie Ryan Casey was outstanding 46 saves, including 21 in the second period. Thoroughbred goalie
Colin Bessey finished with 24 saves.
In the second game, Brockport had no problem with the University of New England on the way to the 5-0 win. Five different players scored for the Golden Eagles, with Dan Galiani and Tom Galiani each contibuting a a goal and an assist. Brockport goalie Todd Sheridan had 27 saves for the shutout.
