Skidmore completes ECAC sweep with 6-2 win over St. Anselm

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College hockey team is off to a 2-0 start with a 6-2 ECAC East win over St. Anselm College, Saturday at the Saratoga City Rink. The Hawks fall to 1-1.

The Thoroughbreds were a perfect four-for-four on power-play opportunities.

Freshman defenseman Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass./NH Monarchs) had two goals and an assist, freshman Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) had a goal and two assists, and junior Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/Northwood School) had three assists for the Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore scored the game's first three goals. Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass./Kent School) opened the scoring at 11:38 of the first. Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass./Springfield Falcons) made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 13:52 and Menard pushed the lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal at 15:26. Mike Richard got St. Anselm on the board at 16:42 to cut the lead to 3-1, heading into the first intermission.

The Thoroughbreds put the game away with two quick goals early in the second. Menard scored his second of the game at 1:05 and Joe Melnyk (Rotterdam, N.Y./CD Selects) scored 32 seconds later to make it 5-1. The Hawks got a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 8:48 from Coleman Noonan to end the period down 5-2.

The lone goal of the third was Cottman's first career goal at 13:04.

Thoroughbred goalie Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity-Pawling) stopped 27 shots, including 13 in the second period.

Skidmore will play SUNY Potsdam in Lake Placid on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
