Skidmore skaters open with 8-6 win over New England College

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College hockey team erupted for five second-period goals on the way to an 8-6 win over New England College in ECAC East action at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

It was the season opener for both teams.

The Pilgrims grabbed a 2-0 first-period lead on power-play goals by Emil Alengard and Jeff Armando. Freshman defenseman Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass./NH Monarchs) pulled Skidmore to within one, 2-1, with a power-play goal at 19:10.

The Thoroughbreds came out quickly in the second when freshman Alex Radmin (Watchung, N.J./Northern Cyclones) scored his first collegiate goal 30 seconds in. NEC regained the lead on Jonathan Boxhill's goal at 6:08.

Skidmore scored the next four goals, including three in a 1:15 span, to take a 6-3 lead. Hunter Thayer (Shelburne, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) scored a power-play goal at 8:36. Alex Mykolenko (Kharkovm Ukraine/Northwood) scored a power-play goal at 15:11. Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass./Kent) made it 5-3 26 seconds later. Mykolenko scored his second of the game at 16:25 for the 6-3 lead. The Pilgrims would get one back when Alengard scored his second goal at 18:46 to make it 6-4 after two.

Chris Webb (Holliston, Mass./New England Huskies) extended the Skidmore lead back to three, 7-4, at 4:04 of the third. NEC regrouped to get it back to one, 7-6, with a goals by Alex Muse at 6:08 and Armando at 7:42. The Pilgrims applied pressure in the final minute, but Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass./Springfield Falcons) was able to get free for an empty net goal for the 8-6 final.

Mykolenko finished with two goals and an assist for the Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore will host St. Anselm on Saturday at 4 p.m., while NEC travels to Castleton State.
