Strong third period carries Skidmore past Babson 4-1

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Skidmore College scored four unanswered goals on the way to a 4-1 ECAC East win over Babson College, Saturday afternoon at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.  The  Thoroughbreds improve  to 10-8 overall and 6-7 in the ECAC East.  The Beavers are 7-10-1 and 6-6.

Babson took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power-play goal by Jason Schneider at 8:56.  Neither team could generate any offense until Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/Northwood School) tied it with a short-handed goal at 19:21 of the second to make it 1-1 after two.

The third period was all Skidmore.  Teddy Gowan (Hamilton, N.Y./Westminster) scored the eventual game-winner at 8:14 from Mykolenko and Sasha Thomas (Gatineau, Quebec/Winchendon).  Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass./Kent) beat Babson goalie Skylar Nipps with a rocket at 12:05 to make it 3-1.  Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J./Loomis Chaffee) scored at 14:27 from Joe Melnyk (Rotterdam, N.Y./CD Selects) and Mike Gibbons (Braintree, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) for the 4-1 final.

Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas/Boston Bulldogs) improved to 7-3 in net  with 25 saves.  Nipps had 12 saves in 54:27 and Dustyn Zenner (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Hudson Valley Eagles) had two saves over the final 5:33.

Skidmore is Southern Maine on Friday for a 7 p.m. ECAC East contest.
