Skidmore runs past Oneonta for Mayor's Cup title

    Oneonta, N.Y.--Visiting Skidmore College got a pair of unassisted goals in the first 26 minutes from senior co-captain, Rachael Sushner(Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) to help lead the Thoroughbreds to a 3-0 victory against host Oneonta in the final game of the 2008 Mayor's Cup tournament. Skidmore (4-0) won its pair of games including a 1-0 win against HartwickCollege
yesterday and captured the team title.
    Oneonta (2-2), which had defeated WilmingtonCollege yesterday 4-1, lost its bid for a third consecutive title with the loss.
    Sushner's opening goal in today's game came at 8:03 into the match. She hit a high ball from inside the box, which squirted through the hands of Oneonta keeper, Kayla Murphy (Pine City/Southside), and then deflected off the right post into the goal.
    Sushner's second goal came after she collected a loose ball in front of the goal and pushed it into the lower right corner of the goal. The ball was bouncing around loose after Oneonta senior, Lindsey Brechbiel (Garnerville/North Rockland) had headed a ball off the end line that was
shot by Sushner as well.
    The final goal for the Thoroughbreds came from freshman Abby Benton(Vergennes, VT/Vergennes Union) out raced an Oneonta defender and then shot her ball over the head of Murphy.
    Skidmore freshman keeper, Meghan Sleezer(Gloversville/Gloversville) made seven saves including a few from point blank range to keep her record clean at 4-0. Sleezer was selected as the Tracey Ranieri Defensive MVP after posting back-to-back shutouts.
    Classmate,Lauren Madden(Huntington/St. Anthony's), who had the winning goal for Skidmore yesterday against Hartwick, was selected as the Kim Muller Offensive MVP.
