Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College hockey team powered its way to a 2-1 win over Colby College in an ECAC East/NESCAC cross over game Friday night at the Saratoga Springs City Rink. The Thoroughbreds have won three straight to improve to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the East. Colby falls to 2-4-1 and 2-2 in NESCAC play.
It was Skidmore's first win over the Mules since the Thoroughbreds joined the ECAC East in 1999.
Alex Mykolenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/Northwood) gave Skidmore a 1-0 lead on a delayed penalty, power-play goal at 10:57 of the second period from
Joe Melnyk (Rotterdam, N.Y./CD Selects) and
Brett Bandazian (Wyckoff, N.J.).
Bandazian made it 2-0 from
Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux/Worcester Acad.) with a 4-on-3 power-play goal at 16:47 of the third.
Colby took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to make cut the lead to one at 18:19 when Dan Nelson scored on a rebound from Jesse Lehman and Mark White. The Mules continued on the power play for the rest of the game, but the Thoroughbred defense held for the 2-1 win.
Skidmore freshman goalie
Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J./Trinity Pawling) had 20 saves, including 11 in the third for his second win of the season. He's only allowed three goals in three games this season. Cody McKinney had 40 saves for Colby. The Thoroughbreds held a 42-21 shot advantage.
Skidmore hosts unbeaten and 14th ranked Bowdoin College on Saturday at 4 p.m. Colby is at Castleton State.
