Volleyball 1-1 after first day of Liberty League Tournament

Schenectady, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College volleyball team threw all it had at Union College, but the 32-5 Dutchwomen held on for a 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20) win in the first match of the Liberty League volleyball tournament.  The Thoroughbreds came right back to beat Vassar 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17).

In the fourth match between the teams this season, Skidmore and Union went right at each other from the start.  The Thoroughbreds led for most of the game, building a 13-8 lead before the Dutchwomen ran off an 8-0 run to grab a 16-13 advantage.  The game was tied 21-21 before Union was able to open the two-point edge for the win.

In the second game, Skidmore overcame an eight-point deficit to pull within three 23-20, but Union held on to go-up 2-0.  The Thoroughbreds held the advantage in the third game holding off a late Dutchwomen run for the 25-21 win.

Skidmore started the fourth game quickly with a 10-3 lead, but Union fought back again with a 14-4 run to grab a 17-14 lead and then went on to the 25-20 win.

Erica Duncan had 15 kills and 15 digs for the Thoroughbreds.  Murray Koch also had a double/double with 16 digs and 12 kills.  Becca Ormsby contributed 48 assists, while Lauren Dinsdale kept the team in the game defensively with 30 digs.  Meredith Palmer added 14 kills and six blocks.

Against Vassar, the Thoroughbreds made quick work of the Brewers with the three-game sweep.  Duncan had 20 digs and 13 kills, Palmer had 13 kills,  and Ormsby added another 35 assists.  Vassar, playing in its final Liberty League tournament falls to 11-20.

Skidmore (24-10) will play St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Saturday in the round-robin tournament.
