SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. –
Gail Cummings-Danson, whose tenure as director of athletics and assistant vice president for student affairs has helped shape Skidmore Athletics and strengthen the broader College community, will retire from Skidmore College in August 2026.
Â
"I feel privileged and honored to have served Skidmore for 21 years alongside outstanding administrators, faculty, staff, and the best athletic department," Cummings-Danson said. "In an ever-changing higher ed and college athletics landscape, the future of Skidmore Athletics is bright. I feel great pride in the work we have all accomplished together, and I look forward to continuing to cheer on all our Thoroughbreds in retirement."
Â
"Gail's leadership has shaped Skidmore in lasting ways," said College President Marc C. Conner. "From the moment I arrived, I saw the strength of the athletics program and the depth of her impact across the College. Her dedication to her coaches and staff, and especially to Skidmore students, continues to inspire me. I am grateful for all she has done to enrich the student-athlete experience at Skidmore."
Â
Cummings-Danson joined Skidmore in 2005 and, over the next two decades, played an essential role in elevating Skidmore Athletics. Her leadership expanded coaching and support staff, strengthened programs across varsity athletics, physical activity, and intramurals, and helped launch initiatives such as the Thoroughbred Society, which recognizes student-athletes who earn grade point averages of 3.67 or higher. Additionally, the Lead Like a Thoroughbred training program was implemented, reinforcing the department's commitment to leadership development among teams and staff.
Â
Her influence extended well beyond Athletics. Cummings-Danson twice served as interim vice president for student affairs, helping guide the division through pivotal transitions while keeping student support at the center of every decision. She also served on numerous College committees, including Campus Master Planning and Institutional Policy and Planning, bringing deep institutional knowledge and a steady commitment to colleagues and students alike.
Â
Among her many accomplishments were major improvements to Skidmore's athletics and wellness facilities. Those efforts included the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center, Ferrari Field, the Wagner Park Complex, renovations to the men's hockey facilities, Valentine Boathouse, Wachenheim Field, and Williamson Sports Center.
Â
Under her leadership, Skidmore teams won four national championships and 41 conference titles, produced 134 All-Americans, and saw 14 student-athletes earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honors. Cummings-Danson leaves behind a thriving athletics program defined by competitive success, academic achievement, modern facilities, and strong campus support.
Â
Adrian Bautista, dean of students and vice president for student affairs, said Cummings-Danson's impact has been felt across Athletics and throughout campus life.
Â
"Gail has served as a trusted colleague to me and a mentor to countless departmental staff — and to students and student-athletes," said Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Affairs Adrian Bautista. "Her deep institutional knowledge has led to exceptional advice and creative solutions at every step. She embodies our division's belief that learning happens everywhere and requires opportunities, challenges, disappointments, defeats, and, of course, the wins too."
Â
One of the finest women's lacrosse players of her era, Cummings-Danson led Temple University to the 1988 NCAA Division I national championship. She graduated with an NCAA-record 289 career goals, including 93 during the team's undefeated 19-0 championship season. A three-time All-American, she also represented her home country of Canada in international competition.
Â
Cummings-Danson was inducted into the U.S. National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2017, she was recognized among 80 women's lacrosse players and coaches honored during the Women's Professional Lacrosse League Legends' Celebration and Legends' Game at U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
Â
She earned a bachelor's degree in physical education, a master's degree in athletic administration, and a doctorate in sports management from Temple University. Before joining Skidmore, she served as an administrator and lacrosse coach at Temple, Connecticut College, and the University at Albany. At UAlbany, she spent 11 years and ultimately served as interim director of athletics during the program's transition to NCAA Division I.
Â
A search for Skidmore's next athletic director is underway, with assistance from Spelman Johnson and a committee co-chaired by Dean/VPSA Bautista and Bernardo Rios, associate professor and faculty athletics representative.
