Game Recap: Softball |

Skidmore falls to first-place Rochester

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team dropped a slugfest in game one and had a one-run lead in the middle of game two, but was unable to fend off Rochester in a doubleheader sweep for the Yellowjackets over the Thoroughbreds at Wagner Park on Friday.

Game 1 – Rochester 12, Skidmore 4
  • Each of the game's first 10 runs, and 12-of-16 total, were scored via the home run as the first two innings in particular looked more like Home Run Derby than a typical softball game. Rochester (21-5, 8-0 Liberty League) homered four times during that span, and five overall in the favorable conditions.
  • The first two batters of the game (Savanna Hernandez and Riley Laygo) homered deep to left to give the visitors a quick lead.
  • Sophia Finch evened the game in the bottom of the first. An error extended the inning before Finch hit a two-run bomb to center – her third of the year.
  • The Yellowjackets kept it going in the second, when Jensen Sminchak hit a grand slam with one out to make it 6-2. Marie Kinchington joined the party with a solo blast two batters later.
  • UofR scored twice in the sixth, this time using a little small ball, to make it 10-2.
  • Down to the team's final out, Nate' Burley launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to extend the game to the seventh inning.
  • Sminchak finished 3-for-5 with six RBI for Rochester. She was a double short of the cycle.

Game 2 – Rochester 7, Skidmore 5
  • Skidmore (15-15, 2-6) scored a pair in the third inning to take its first lead of the day, 3-2, but Rochester re-gained the lead using four-run top of the fourth inning. Madi Paige drove in the tying and go-head runs on a two-run single to left.
  • Two runs then scored on a Sminchak infield single to make it 6-3.
  • The visitors made it 7-3 with a single run in the sixth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Skidmore pulled to within two all with two outs. Madison Bonham doubled, and then Elle Harrison tripled to make it 7-4. Then, Sam Waters singled the opposite way to score Harrison and make it a two-run game.
  • Skidmore pitcher Natalie Mayne stranded a pair of Yellowjackets in the seventh, but the Thoroughbreds went down in order in the seventh fo finish off the sweep for Rochester.
  • Rachel Monser went 3-for-4 for Skidmore with a double.
  • Waters, Burley, and Bonham all had two hits.
  • Mayne surrendered four earned runs but did not issue walk despite 14 Rochester hits. She struck out three.
  • Molly Broccolo, the winner in game one, gave way to Maddie White for the final four innings. White struck out six to lock down her eighth win. She also had the save in the opener.
