Thoroughbreds hold off Buena Vista for 7–6 win in last day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Skidmore College softball team built an early lead and held off a late push from Buena Vista University to earn a 7–6 victory Thursday morning at THE Spring Games. Skidmore lost its final game, 9-4, to Regis College in the afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds finished the trip with a 4-4 record after its run of four wins in five games came to an end against the Pride. Skidmore hit .318 as a team for the trip with 34 stolen bases.
 
Game 1 - Skidmore 7, Buena Vista 6
  • Skidmore scored six runs over the first three innings to take control after Buena Vista took an early lead.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished with 10 hits and seven stolen bases in the win.
  • Delaney Swain led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Nate' Burley finished 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
  • Lulu Mickle recorded two hits, an RBI, and two stolen bases.
  • Madison Bonham doubled and drove in a run.
  • Sophia Finch added a triple and scored a run.
  • Sam Waters scored twice and stole three bases.
  • Skidmore opened the scoring in the first inning when Waters walked, stole second and third, and came home on a wild pitch.
  • After the Beavers plated three in the bottom of the first, Finch tripled in the second inning and scored on another wild pitch to cut the deficit to one.
  • The Thoroughbreds broke the game open with four runs in the third inning.
  • Waters singled and stole second and third before Elle Harrison walked and stole second.
  • Burley delivered a two-run double down the left-field line to score both runners.
  • Bonham followed with an RBI double to right center.
  • Swain capped the rally with an RBI single up the middle.
  • Buena Vista cut into the lead with back-to-back doubles to begin the fifth.
  • Mickle drove in a run in the sixth inning with an RBI single to push the Skidmore lead to 7–4.
  • Buena Vista added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings but could not complete the comeback. Mallory Allen induced a game-ending ground out with the tying run on second.
  • Allen earned the win, throwing a complete game while allowing six runs on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
 
Game 2 – Regis 9, Skidmore 4
  • Regis jumped out early with three runs in the first inning and four more in the second to build a 7–0 lead.
  • The Pride finished with nine runs on 14 hits, while Skidmore recorded seven hits.
  • After the Pride went through the first four innings facing the minimum, Skidmore broke through in the fifth inning.
  •  Swain singled to open the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Sienna Liston.
  • After advancing on a wild pitch and a fly ball, Liston scored when Cortney Somsky reached on a throwing error to cut the deficit to 8–1 and extend the game into the sixth.
  • The Thoroughbreds rallied in the seventh inning with three runs.
  •  Bonham doubled to left field to put two runners in scoring position.
  • Somsky drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Allen followed with an RBI double to center field.
  • Harrison capped the rally with an RBI single, bringing the tying run to the on-deck circle before the game ended.
  • Harrison and  Waters each finished 2-for-4 to lead the Skidmore offense.
  • Rachel Monser took the loss after allowing six runs in 1.1 innings.
  • Shayne Cleeve provided five innings of relief, allowing three runs while striking out four.
  • Piper Bockler recorded the final two outs in the seventh inning.

Skidmore returns home and is scheduled to resume the season on Saturday, March 21 at Castleton.
