ITHACA, NY – Clinching the best women's relay finish in program history not once, but twice, highlighted another strong showing by the Skidmore College men's and women's swimming and diving teams on day three of the Liberty League Championship meet Friday.
The Thoroughbreds' women's team captured the runner-up spot in a relay event for the first time in program history — and then repeated the feat just hours later — headlining a strong finals session that featured three individual podium finishes and four new program records. Skidmore remains in third place with 750.5 points.
On the men's side, the Thoroughbreds secured a pair of relay podium finishes along with a diving podium performance. With one new program record and contributions from four B-Finalists and four C-Finalists, Skidmore totaled 461 points to remain in sixth place through three days of competition.
PODIUM FINISHERS
- In the men's 200 medley relay, the Skidmore quartet of Brandon Lis, Jaz Liotta, Thomas Gaughan and Jonah Vaynshtok clocked in at seventh with a time of 1:37.58
- In the women's 200 medley relay, the Thoroughbreds group of Ginny Hunt, Faye Mooney, Gretchen Gwitt and Kelly Hsu took second place with a program record time of 1:46.16, and securing the best women's relay podium finish in program history.
- In the women's 200 fly A-Final, junior Sabrina Reed touched in fifth with a time of 2:14.01. The junior also recorded the fifth-fastest time of 2:15.08 during the morning prelims.
- In the women's 100 back A-Final, Gretchen Gwitt took third with a program record time of 57.75, after initially leading the race through the first 50 before being out-touched at the finish. The senior swam the sixth-fastest time of 58.56 during the morning prelims.
- In the women's 100 breast A-Final, Faye Mooney placed third with a program record time of 1:06.48 and just out-touched by one-tenths of a second for silver. The junior clocked the second-fastest time of 1:07.04 during the morning prelims.
- In the men's 1-meter dive finals, senior Tomas Ruiz placed sixth with a score of 360.10. The senior qualified during the prelims with the sixth-best score of 338.30.
- In the men's 800 free relay, the Skidmore group of Vaynshtok, Graham Mahoney, Liotta and Gaughan finished six with a time of 7:02.57.
- In the women's 800 free relay, the Thoroughbred quartet of Hsu, Emelia Lan, Arianna Matthews and Jae Mason touched in second place with a combined time of 7:43.91, setting a new program record in the process by eight seconds and tying the best relay finish in program history.
MEN'S POINTS SCORERS
- In the 200 fly B-Final, sophomore Thomas Gaughan took the heat win with a new program record time of 1:54.45. The sophomore narrowly missed out on the A-Final during the morning prelims, after clocking in with a then-program record time of 1:55.90 to place tenth.
- In the 200 fly C-Final, junior Henry Brien took first with a time of 2:01.19. The junior clocked in with a time of 2:04.53 during the morning prelims.
- In the 100 back B-Final, freshman Graham Mahoney finished fifth with a time of 53.81. Mahoney also swam a time of 53.78 during the morning prelims.
- Also competing in the B-Final, senior Brandon Lis took seventh at a time of 54.29. The senior clocked in at 54.28 in the morning prelims.
- In the 100 breast B-Final, junior Aidan Darling finished in sixth at a time of 1:00.47. Darling clocked in at a time of 1:00.66 during the morning prelims.
- In the 100 breast C-Final, freshman Josiah Leese took third with a time of 1:02.04. The first year swam a time of 1:01.70 during the morning prelims.
- Also competing in the C-Final, freshman Oliver Merkner touched in fifth at a time of 1:05.03. Merkner also swam a time of 1:04.86 during the morning prelims.
- Also competing in the C-Final, freshman Luke Splendido placed sixth with a swim of 1:05.08. The first year clocked in at a time of 1:05.71 during the morning prelims.
WOMEN'S POINTS SCORERS
- In the 200 fly B-Final, freshman Lily Splendido clocked in eighth with a time of 2:25.57. The first year swam a time of 2:24.75 during the morning prelims.
- In the 100 back B-Final, junior Jae Mason took the heat win with a top time of exactly 59.00 seconds. Mason narrowly missed out on an A-Final bid after clocking in at a time of 58.82 to place ninth during the morning prelims.
- Also competing in the B-Final, senior Ginny Hunt touched in third with a time of 59.61. The senior clocked in at a time of 59.29 during the morning prelims.
- In the 100 back C-Final, senior Ella Palmet took the heat win with a time of 1:01.93. The senior swam a time of 1:01.89 during the morning prelims.
- In the 100 breast B-Final, senior Holly Staats took seventh with a time of 1:11.12. The senior recorded a time of 1:11.77 during the morning prelims.
- In the 100 breast C-Final, junior Katherine Manaresi placed first with a time of 1:09.55. The junior clocked a time of 1:11.79 during the morning prelims.
UP NEXT
Skidmore is set for tomorrow's Championship Saturday starting with the morning prelims at 10 AM, before the finals session kicks off at 6 PM. The order of events includes the 1650 free, 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast and 400 free relay in the pool. Diving will also conclude with the women's 3-meter dive.
